Have you thought that the days of exchanging business cards are long gone? If you have, you’d be wrong. They’re still a powerful tool when it comes to making a strong first impression. But how do you stand out from the stack that inevitably ends up in people’s junk drawers? Here are a few of our tips to help differentiate yourself from everyone else.
Since you are limited to such a small space, be sure to only include the key information needed on the card, for example, name, email, title, website, and phone number. Now that you know what information you’ll include, the fun part begins…deciding on the design that will best communicate your brand!
What shape should your card take? While it should still fit in a wallet, you can choose if your card is square or displays the information horizontally. Another fun design point to consider is printing on both sides of the card. It can help your card be remembered and give it a bit more personality.
Does your business lend itself to having a unique business card shape? You could simply round the corners of the card so it looks different than the other cards in a stack or if you are a doggie daycare business you could get a die-cut created in the shape of a bone. The cost of the die-cut is a one time fee that your printer can use over and over, every time you get cards created.
For any print project, there are three types of finishes your paper can have. The first is totally uncoated. This is a very porous paper–think your standard office copy paper. Your text will be read easily but it isn’t ideal for images as they won’t pop off the page.
Next is matte stock, which is a digital copy paper where the inks sit more on top and doesn’t absorb as much as a porous paper. This choice allows for both text and pictures to pop off the page.
Finally, you can choose a glossy finish which we recommend for projects that don’t have a lot of text and are heavy on images.
Since your card will be printed, choosing the right paper is very important and should not be overlooked. From card thickness to the coating on the paper, there are plenty of choices to help you create the perfect business card that exemplifies you and your brand.
Some fun ideas to think about are the texture, thickness, or using painted edges. If you love paper as much as we do, here’s our full guide on how to pick the right paper for your print projects.
